We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bhutan
Dear Sangay,
My apologies for the late reply on giving feedback for our Bhutan trip from 30 April to 6 May 2015, facilitated by Sonam Dorji (guide) and Lhaka (driver).
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bhutan. Registration for the trip was hassle-free and the email correspondences with Druk Asia were prompt and clear. The hotels were clean and comfortable, and we also liked the local Bhutanese cuisine, which was similar in taste to Singapore’s food. The provision of the Gho and Kira was an excellent idea – we managed to wear them on two days and took many beautiful pictures.
Our guide Sonam and driver Lhaka were excellent, friendly and reliable. We gained much knowledge about Bhutan’s history and culture from Sonam. Lhaka was a dependable and approachable driver, always ready to share his experiences with us. We were glad and felt safe to be ferried by Lhaka along Bhutan’s winding and mountainous roads, of which certain parts were under construction.
I am also grateful to Sonam and Lhaka for their help in organising my proposal to my now fiancé Diana. On 2 May, the third day of the trip, I told Sonam about my intention to propose to Diana at Tiger’s Nest (Day 6 of the trip). Although Sonam had learnt about my plans at such short notice, he was prompt to check the Buddhist Calendar and advised me to propose that very day. Sonam informed me that it was the perfect day for a proposal as the remaining days of our trip were inauspicious. In the afternoon, Sonam and Lhaka brought us to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, an attraction that was not part of the planned itinerary. I successfully proposed to Diana at the top of the Chorten that had a fantastic view overlooking the valley. Sonam and Lhaka also secretly bought white scarves, and got the Chorten’s caretaker/monk to present it to us as a blessing. We are deeply appreciative and touched by Sonam and Lhaka’s thoughtfulness.
In addition, we were treated to exceptional experiences in Bhutan, which would not be possible without Sonam’s initiative and pro-activeness. For instance in Thimphu, we were brought to a cultural fair at the Royal Gardens where we caught glimpses of the Queen Mother, the King’s eldest sister and government officials mingling with the public. Later in the evening, we were fortunate to catch the King and his football team in action, and saw the King score a goal! I would like to suggest that the option of homestays during the trip be made more apparent in the marketing of your tours. I believe this will make the package more attractive for potential travellers to Bhutan who are looking for an even more authentic experience.
I understand that Sonam and Lhaka are freelance agents. I would highly recommend that Druk Asia engage them to host more tours in the future. Thank you very much for an unforgettable experience in Bhutan.
Regards
Hanying and Diana
